1900 OR CENSUS - Barbara Canos, age 50, widowed, occupation boarding house, b. Sep 1849 in Oregon, is enumerated with son John G., age 24, occupation teamster, b. Jul 1875 in Oregon, along with daughter Sarah Smith, married 8 years [husband is not enumerated in the household], no children, b. Aug 1873 in Oregon, daughter Fanny Sullivan, age 24, married five years, no children, b. Jul 1875 in Oregon, and son-in-law James Sullivan, age not given, occupation RR laborer, b. Oregon.
DISCREPANCY - maiden name shown as both Johnston and Johnson.
DISCREPANCY – most records indicate birth year as 1846, but 1900 census gives year of birth as 1849.
DISCREPANCY – DC found for Mary Canos, d. 1 Feb 1901, with burial 2 Feb in Cornelius [Cloverdale] Cemetery. The undertaker is W.T. Rigdon.

In this city, Jan 31, A. D. 1909, Mrs. Barbara Johnson Canos, aged 63 years.
Mrs. Canos was the wife of John Canos, to whom she was married in early life. To this union were born seven children: Isabell Canos, who died in early life; Mrs. Sadie Smith, resident of Salem; J. G. Canos, the only son who also resides in Salem; Mrs. J. C. Walton, of St. Johns, Oregon; Mrs. T. E. Smith, of Elgin, Oregon; Mrs. J. F. Sullivan, Portland, Oregon; Mrs. P.O. Wage, of Sunnyslope, Alberta, Canada.
Mrs. Canos was born at Ft. Hall, A. D. 1846. Came to Oregon in 1861 [1851?] at the age of 5 years with her parents, locating in Marion county, of which county she has been a resident ever since, residing in Salem since 1883. Thus her life was co-existent with much of the history of Marion county and all of this Northwest coast. She saw the city of Salem grow from a mere trading post to its present importance, under her eyes came the greater part of the population of the Willamette valley, the railroads, steamships, and all the conveniences of modern life.
In early life she was baptized into the Christian church of which in her quiet was she was a consistent member until the time of her death. Her loss is sincerely mourned by her daughters and son to whom she was ever a good and loving mother and with these many other friends join in mourning. She was buried by the side of her father in the cemetery southwest of Turner.
