OBITUARY:
Descendant of Pioneers Dies.
Howard Nelson Hunsaker, 80, a member of a pioneer Marion County family, died Monday at his 2470 Trade St. SE residence, following a long illness.
A native of Scio, he had lived in the Mid-Willamette Valley all his life. His great-grandfather Joseph Hunsaker crossed the plains in a covered wagon and settled on a donation land claim near Turner. Howard Hunsaker had farmed a remaining portion of the land claim until he became ill last summer.
He was one of the first rural mail carriers out of Turner, running a route in his late teens. He retired from the Oregon State Penitentiary staff in 1955 after 23 years with the flax department. He had moved into Salem from Scio in 1926.
He was a member of the Chemeketa Odd Fellows Lodge No. 1, Salem, and was on the lodge’s board of trustees. He and his wife Anna M. Hunsaker had celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1961.
Surviving, besides the widow, are daughters Mrs. Elsther Himes, Portland, and Mrs. Mary E. Thompkins, Salem; sons, Howard N. Hunsaker, Roseburg, and Morris R. Hunsaker, Salem; sister, Mrs. Dorothy Gore, Drain; brother Cecil Hunsaker, Salem; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Barrick Funeral Chapel, Rev. W. Carl Calhoun officiating. Interment will be in the Turner IOOF Cemetery.
